LASE Innovation’s Cell Barcoding Technology Breaking New Ground in Flow Cytometry

Woburn, Mass., November 30, 2023–LASE Innovation, a developer of the groundbreaking LP Cell Barcoding™ platform revealed two ‘first of its kind’ flow cytometry applications today, in results published in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

The study describes a novel Multi-pass flow™cytometry, and a Time-lapse flow™ cytometry method.  Both are high-dimensional cytometry approaches leveraging cellular barcoding via laser microparticles to track and repeatedly measure each cell using more markers and fewer colors than standard flow cytometry techniques.

The current state-of-the-art in flow cytometry is pushing the boundaries of high-dimensional flow cytometry using spectral flow that helps to account and adjust for the spectral overlap of closely related fluors. This permits development of panels of 20, 30 and 40 color antibody targets.   Despite these technical advances, high-order panels remain costly and challenging to develop with limited availability of well performing colors and time-consuming validation to minimize spread.  Moreover, current status quo flow cytometers are limited to single time-point measurements for cells, losing important single-cell resolution of temporal changes. 

“Using our massively multiplexed cell barcoding technology, we are hoping to change how our customers approach understanding their cells with flow cytometry,” said Sheldon J.J. Kwok, PhD. CEO and Co-Founder of LASE Innovation and first author of the publication.  “The immune system is a dynamic system. A key challenge in our understanding of immune function is the ability to track individual cell responses at scale. We are convinced that bringing researchers the ability to measure the dynamic responses of their cells will dramatically advance their understanding of immune function and lead to better therapies.”

LASE is currently developing their LP Cell Barcoding technology for flow cytometry applications and workflows and engaging in further studies to demonstrate the impact of their Multi-pass and Time-lapse applications and has plans to offer services in 2024 and launch a proprietary LASE Cytometer by 2025.
